The IBM 3270 PC (type 5271), presented in October 1983, was an IBM PC XT that contained the additional hardware required at the time of publication for emulating an IBM 3270 type terminal . The 3270 PC could be used both as a normal single-user computer and as a terminal in the host terminal system .

The 3270 AT (type 5281) was also available. It corresponds to the 3270 PC, but based on the IBM PC AT instead of the PC XT as the basic model. For an explanation of the technical differences between the two devices, see IBM PC AT .

The additional hardware took up almost all of the space in the computer that was intended for extensions. It comprised a multi-part, programmable graphics card extension from TTL modules. In order to meet the higher graphics requirements of a 3270, a CGA -compatible graphics card with a slightly higher resolution was installed. Another expansion card intercepted the signals from the PC / 3270 keyboard supplied, processed the 3270 key codes, and passed the PC key codes on to the normal keyboard connection. The connection to the host computer - usually an IBM mainframe - was provided by another plug-in card, which provided a 3270-compatible serial interface with a BNC connector .
