ICON A5 is a high - wing amphibious aircraft made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic with retractable landing gear . The light aircraft is manufactured in the USA by ICON Aircraft.

history

A prototype was built in 2007-2008 and made its first flight in July 2008. Series production began in 2013. The interior was developed by BMW Designworks USA. The type is approved by the Federal Aviation Administration as "Special Light-Sport Aircraft (SLSA)".

Technical specifications

It offers space for two people in a closed cockpit and is powered by a 100 HP (75 kW) Rotax 912 iS engine with a three-blade pusher propeller. The maximum take-off weight is 686 kilograms. The special feature of the A5 is that the wings can be folded onto the fuselage for ground transport and storage in the hangar. The trailer transport width is then 2.53 meters.

Incidents

  • On April 1, 2017, a factory A5 crashed in a hard water landing near Biscayne National Park . It was the first incident involving an A5.
  • On May 8, 2017 at 9:20 a.m. local time, a factory A5 crashed due to a pilot's error on the steep bank of Lake Berryessa in Napa County (California) . Two ICON Aircraft employees, including a senior engineer, died in the incident.
  • On November 7, 2017, former baseball player Roy Halladay had a fatal accident with his A5 , which crashed into the sea northwest of Tampa on the west coast of Florida. During the autopsy, drugs were found in the victim's blood.
