ID (music)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

ID (short form of the word Id entificator and abbreviation for I n D evelopement ) describes an untitled, mostly unfinished piece of music in the music world. The term is used in particular in the track lists of DJ sets from the EDM area .

definition

“ID” stands for a recording or production that has not been assigned a fixed title at a time or has not yet been completed at a time. The most frequently mentioned context is that if a production has not yet been published in a track list of a DJ set, the title and artist are replaced by this abbreviation. In this connection, however, this title must not be confused with the abbreviation TBA , as this is usually used as a placeholder in a song to withhold the title or performer of a piece for marketing reasons, for example.

Word origin

The abbreviation is primarily attributed to the term identifier , in connection with which the term “ID” is associated with a specific content (by default, an artist name or a music title) or leads back to a content. However, other sources attribute the letters to the words i n d evelopement (dt. In development ), which accordingly also describes an incomplete work.

Establishment

The abbreviation “ID” is most widespread in the EDM scene. There the use of it increased in particular due to the increasing popularity of podcasts or radio shows in the 2010s, the track list of which mostly also contained new productions by the DJs themselves in order to get reactions and prospects of potential success. These were initially indicated with "TBA". However, since this would generally correlate with a cancellation of the lane, the term "ID" became more and more established. It has also become a trend to upload live recordings of DJ sets to various music platforms. There, too, this mode of expression developed into normality. The term was also used in memes; For example, after a festival where the most varied of acts presented a series of unpublished songs, pictures were created showing one of the acts behind a gun, the cartridges of which represent the two letters.

Over time, the title of the untitled song as "ID" became more and more blurred with the fact that a song was unpublished. For example, in a podcast marked as “ID”, new productions are categorized in the same way as a titled production that has simply not yet been published. In this regard, entire compilations in which all of the unreleased songs by well-known musicians were presented are successfully used as “Unreleased IDs” videos on YouTube.

As an interface with TBA signing, the name is often used by record labels to keep the identity of an artist or a song title secret before publication.

Trivia

A song released in 2017 by Michael Patrick Kelly feat. Gentleman officially bears the slightly different name iD , which, however, has nothing to do with the topic dealt with here.

Boombox Cartels and Flosstradamus ' joint track from 2018 also bears the name ID.
