The Greek Institute for Geological and Mining Research ( Greek Ινστιτούτο Γεωλογικών & Μεταλλευτικών Ερευνών Institouto Geologikon & Metalleftikon Erevnon , ΙΓΜΕ IGME for short ), founded in 1976, deals with the occurrence of mineral raw material studies and the investigation and evaluation. The branch in Xanthi is responsible for the island of Thasos .

Even before the iron ore operations were finally closed , the Organization for the Industrial Development of Greece (OWA) decided in 1960 to thoroughly assess the remaining iron ore reserves on the island of Thasos. In 1962, the IGME carried out investigations into this matter with the French Bureau de Recherche Géologique et Minière ( BRGM ). With the results of the study, it is quite clear that no new concessionaire could be found to resume ore mining.

Finally, the IGME worked under Nikolaos Epitropou from July 2002 on a feasibility study for an industrial culture project with a description of Speidel 's calamine extraction and processing company from the beginning of the last century. EU co-financing of € 600,000 was available for the project. The feasibility result is now available, but is not accessible. The restoration of Speidel's administration and residential building, the Palati in Limenaria, was canceled in 2005. The building has since fallen into disrepair.
