IK level of impact resistance

In electrical engineering according to EN 50102 and EN 62262 or IEC 62262 international by standardized :

" Degrees of protection through housings for electrical equipment (equipment) against external mechanical loads ( IK code )"

The IK code is, in particular, a measure of impact and shock loads .

Based on the much earlier standard of protection IP (Abbreviation for i nternational p rotection , international protection) the letter K phonetically derived from the French ca ter , so break .

There are eleven codes according to the impact energy that an enclosure can withstand.

The IK code is used for housings of electrical devices and distributors, for example also for switches, sockets, lights or keyboards.

The test is carried out with a pendulum hammer, alternatively up to IK07 with a spring hammer or above IK07 with a free-fall hammer. The test procedure is specified in the standards EN 60068-2-75 (or VDE 0468-2-75) and IEC 60068-2-75.

For some applications, different, independent requirements and tests for mechanical resistance apply. For example, the ball impact resistance of lights in sports halls is not measured according to an IK protection class, but in accordance with DIN VDE 0710-13, and the test is carried out with a handball.
