The Elektropraktiker ( ep ) is a German-language specialist journal for electrical specialists in trade and industry as well as in planning and engineering offices. It appears monthly and is published by the Berlin publisher Huss-Medien .

history

1947 to 1989

After approval by the Soviet Military Administration in Germany (SMAD), the Berlin publishing house Die Wirtschaft published the trade journal Das Handwerk for the first time in July 1947 - a journal for German craftsmanship . It was initially aimed at all trades, but soon contained special pages on electrical engineering . From January 1950 there was Das Handwerk with seven different editions. One of them was shared between vehicle construction and electrical engineering. In May 1951 the electrical trade received its own edition, which in July 1953 first became Das Elektro-Handwerk and in April 1954 the Elektro-Praktiker .

With the new name, the interactive rubric The reader asks - The electrical practitioner answers , in which experts deal with the problems outlined in electrical engineering practice, was created. This rubric is a  permanent part of every issue to this day - now under the title Reader Inquiries .

From January 1960, ep was no longer published by Die Wirtschaft , but by VEB Verlag Technik in Berlin . The article and the hyphen in the name Der Elektro-Praktiker were omitted when the lettering on the front page was redesigned in January 1989. Since then, the trade journal has been called Elektropraktiker . The ep year census begins in 1947.

1990s

In the course of German reunification , VEB Verlag Technik was converted into a GmbH on July 1, 1990 , of which the Treuhandanstalt was 100% owner . From this, the Munich publisher Wolfgang Huss bought the ReWi Verlag für Recht und Wirtschaft (formerly the state publishing house of the GDR ), the publishing house Die Wirtschaft , the publishing house for construction and the publishing house Technik and thus also the electrical practitioner published there in September 1991 .

A 16-page supplement for vocational training was published for the first time at the end of 1992 under the title Learning and Ability - On the Way to Becoming an Electrician . In 1994, in addition to the magazine, the book series Elektropraktiker-Bibliothek was launched. As a spin-off, the title electrical retailer was created in 1996 , a specialist magazine for electrical wholesalers and retailers. A little later, the ep expanded its print offer with an internet presence that was quite extensive for the time, including a. with selected download options for subscribers as well as with industry news and service offers. Based on a computer program for simulating electrotechnical protective measures , the Instrom software was released in 1998 . It supports planners and installers in the standard-compliant calculation and dimensioning of low-voltage systems .

In 1999, Huss-Medien took over the magazine JET from Wiesbaden publisher Vieweg : The electrical technician for industrial and manual professions - magazine for training and integrated it into the learning and ability supplement . This is still today - still with 16 pages and free of advertisements, but now under the title Magazine for Education and Training - an integral part of every ep issue.

From 2001 the electrical practitioner had his own online editorial office, which was reintegrated into the print editorial team in 2004. In 2004, the magazine expanded its online offering to include ep-Plus , a database with the specialist articles and reader inquiries from the print edition from 1999 ( learning and ability : from 1996) and the standards information service of the BFE Oldenburg .

Also in 2004, the magazine laid the foundation for a series of topic-specific special publications with the Special Lightning and Surge Protection. This was followed by special issues focusing on bus technology , fire and explosion protection , energy efficiency , renewable energies , building automation , electrical installation , measurement and testing , photovoltaics , legal security, safety technology , small controls and lighting technology .

Since May 2006, the subscription edition has included a quarterly instruction on occupational health and safety , which is created in cooperation with the BG ETEM trade association . The specialist journal ep Photovoltaik first appeared as a supplement by the electrical practitioner in February 2008 ; it is aimed at qualified electricians who plan, install and maintain PV systems . From May 2008, a web TV offering was tested with ep-TV . At the beginning of 2011, the ep started a nationwide series of seminars for electrical planners under the title eplanerforum . As part of the Leipzig electrical trade fair efa , the editorial team awarded the German E-Planner Prize for the first time in October 2015 .

In April 2012, the magazine published a new version of its planning and calculation tool ep Instrom , which supports data exchange with other electrical engineering software solutions. There are currently interfaces to DDS-CAD from Data Design System, to the electrical manager from Mebedo and to measuring devices from Gossen Metrawatt , Sonel and Megger . Since September 2016, it has been possible to play through the training content conveyed in the Learning and Ability section on the digital platform my.deduu.de and to answer additional questions. Further online offers are apps for frequently asked reader inquiries and for electrical engineering regulations .

Subtitles and target groups

The subtitles of the magazine reflect the respective thematic focus and target groups. The previous title Das Elektro-Handwerk , published from July 1953 to March 1954, was called the magazine for radio technology , electrical installation and electrical engineering . From April 1954 to December 1964, Der Elektro-Praktiker was subtitled the magazine for electrical installation, electrical engineering and lighting technology . This changed in January 1965 into a trade journal for practitioners of heavy current technology in industry and craft . From January 1993 it was called the trade magazine for electrical specialists in trade and industry . In early 1996, the term was an electrician in accordance with the electrical regulations of the DKE gender neutral to the electrician ; from January 1999 the ep used the plural electricians . Since January 2012, the subtitle has been a specialist magazine for electrical specialists in trade, planning and industry .

Essentially, the specialist journals Elektropraktiker (ep) and das elektrohandwerk (de) share the German-speaking market in the specialist electrician segment. The de is the organ of the Central Association of German Electrical and Information Technology Crafts ( ZVEH ). In contrast, the ep is free of associations. Other providers - albeit with significantly lower circulations sold and subscribed to - are the magazines building & automation (b & a) , Elektrobörse , Gebäudedigital (GD) and building technology and craft (g + h) .
