IMAPI

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

IMAPI is a programming interface in all Windows versions from Windows XP for writing to optical data media.

With IMAPI it was possible for the first time to write to writable optical data carriers without programs from third-party providers (e.g. Nero Burning ROM , which was extremely popular at the time ). Windows Explorer supported the creation of data CDs, while Windows Media Player also made use of IMAPI to create audio CDs.

The first version, IMAPI 1.0, only supported writing to blank CDs. IMAPI 2.0 was introduced with Windows Vista and also made it possible to write to blank DVDs . In response to pressure from the device industry, Microsoft released an update that also installed IMAPI 2.0 on Windows XP. A little later, the Windows Feature Pack for Storage was released , which expanded Windows XP and Windows Vista to support Blu-ray blanks. Windows 7 includes this support by default.

IMAPI 1.0 was implemented as a Windows system service. Instead, IMAPI 2.0 is a library (DLL file) that can be called when needed.
