IMS Global Learning Consortium

The IMS Global Learning Consortium , which was founded in 1997 by the American organization National Learning Infrastructure Initiative (NLII), endeavors to “develop open standards for the e-learning sector, which should enable the search, exchange and reusability of digital teaching material " . The name "IMS" originally stood for "Instructional Management System". This acronym was later discarded as the consortium said it raised more questions than answers.

Numerous IMS specifications have become de facto standards worldwide and are made available free of charge.
