IMule ( i nvisible Mule ; German invisible mule ) is a P2P client available for several platforms , based on aMule , which enables anonymous file sharing via the I2P network. Up to version 1.2.2 a separate router software was necessary for this in order to establish a connection with the I2P network. From version 1.2.3 iMule can also be used as a standalone by integrating the I2P router. However, if you want to use the other services that I2P offers, you need a separate I2P router - software that takes care of the anonymization of communication between various programs and is also easy to install.

In contrast to aMule , eMule or similar eDonkey2000 clients, iMule does not also connect via server, but runs entirely decentrally via the so-called Kademlia protocol, which is completely anonymized here by I2P .

The advantage of anonymous data exchange via the Kademlia protocol is offset by the disadvantage of the lower speed - anonymization is offered by an encrypted mix network and this slows down the transfers.
