aMule is a spin-off of file sharing - clients eMule for the eDonkey2000 - network protocol . In contrast to its model, aMule can be easily ported to other operating systems . The free project emerged from xMule in 2003 , the developers of which had fallen out.

overview

The aim of the project is an equal alternative to eMule, so that even non-Windows users can fully exploit the possibilities of the eDonkey2000 network. aMule also uses the Kademlia algorithm to find other network participants . The prototype and replica are completely compatible with each other and the graphical user interfaces are deliberately kept similar. In aMule there are also functions that were taken over from eMule mods , which are also only available for Windows.

The development team also offers the programs amuled and amulecmd . In amuled is a aMule version on daemon / Windows system service base that lacks a user interface and thus very little resources claimed. For example, it can also be used on servers that normally do not have a user interface.

Using amulecmd , amuled or aMule itself can be controlled locally or via a network via the command line . The amulegui graphical user interface can be used as a control for both a local and a remote aMule installation; for example, a client installed on a server can be operated from the local system as if it were a local installation. The remote control method common for eMule is also possible via HTTP / web interface ( amuleweb ). In addition to the source code, the project homepage also contains binary , compiled versions of aMule for various operating systems.

Meanwhile, aMule is recommended on the official eMule homepage as an alternative for other operating systems.

Origin of name

The name aMule stands for “All-Platform Mule” ( English for “mule for all platforms”) and is a homage to its role model eMule (“Electronic-Mule”; “Electronic mule”). The name eMule, in turn, was based on the eDonkey2000 client ("Electronic Donkey 2000"; "Electronic Donkey 2000") which eMule had as a model.
