INFOLOG (software)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

INFOLOG was a communication software in the 1980s and 1990s . This general sounding term was then understood as a technical term. INFOLOG was therefore also a software for professionals in the IuD industry (information and documentation). Even before the times of the World Wide Web and web browsers, communication software was specifically geared towards communication with commercial online databases at database hosts such as DIALOG and STN International , based on Datex-P and Telnet , optimized for information retrieval . INFOLOG worked independently of the host. The software still exists today. While it was called INFOLOG 2000 in the meantime, it can be found today as 'Info Log'.

The software, which was previously known as communication software, is a comfortable, albeit sober-looking specialist program that automatically logs into the host's online databases , search queries prepared in advance, which are often several lines long and in special query languages ( Retrieval language) such as B. Messenger are written, processed within a very short time and all actions and results are logged. Such a database query is often prepared for a long time by researching words and synonyms with knowledge of the respective databases, before it is then usually carried out within seconds. Every minute of searching an online database costs connection fees.

INFOLOG was originally produced and offered by IuK Rieth GmbH in Freiburg, which has been active since 1983 and which also developed the other special products Infotrans, Infoscope and Info CD. The products were later offered by the Ever company in Munich. Today infoapps GmbH is responsible for these programs.

Alternative communication programs for communication with database hosts were PROCOMM, TELIX and GENESYS.
