The IPD Periquito ( Portuguese : " budgie ") was a glider of the Brazilian Instituto de Pesquisas e Desenvolvimento .
History and construction
Aeronautical engineer José Kovacs designed a glider called Periquito (also known as Periquito I) while at the Instituto de Pesquisas e Desenvolvimento . The aim was to develop a small glider at low cost that could be transported and stored in a space-saving manner. The Periquito was designed as a shoulder-wing aircraft with a conventional tail unit. The closed cockpit was located in front of the wings in the fuselage, which, like the wings, consisted of a wooden structure covered with fabric. There was a skid under the fuselage, behind it a wheel and a skid at the stern. The wings could be folded for transport and storage in less than a minute. At the Brazilian gliding championship in 1957, the machine reached second place. Despite this success, Kovacs revised the design, with various elements being redesigned. The new machine , now called Periquito II , was still flying in 1957, although, in contrast to the original model, it was partly clad with plywood. A total of 8 Periquito IIs are said to have been built, of which two still flew in 1990.
