IP address management

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

IP Address Management ( IPAM ), also known as IP address management , is a method for determining and modifying information relating to Internet protocol addresses ( IP addresses ) or the IP address space of a network . With IPAM, administrators can ensure that the inventory of available IP addresses is always up-to-date and that sufficient free IP addresses are available.

Network administrators use IPAM to determine various detailed information about their networks and to keep it up to date. These include:

  • Size of the still available IP address space
  • Information about subnets
  • Permanent (static) versus temporary (dynamic DHCP ) status of each individual IP address
  • Identification of the standard router of the individual devices in the network
  • Host name assigned to each IP address
  • Specific hardware associated with a specific IP address
  • Determination of dead IP addresses (assigned, but not used)

The following explanation exists for Microsoft Server Windows 2016 : IP Address Management (IPAM) is an integrated suite of tools that enable end-to-end planning, provisioning, management and monitoring of your IP address infrastructure with a comprehensive user interface. IPAM automatically detects IP address infrastructure servers and Domain Name System (DNS) servers in your network and enables you to manage them on a central interface.

With the change from IPv4 to IPv6 address spaces, the administration of IP addresses in large networks (e.g. in data centers) becomes necessary. Manual collections of records or allocation statements are no longer sufficient.

Therefore there is a multitude of free ( GNU ) as well as manufacturer-bound software tools for the effective administration of the IP address spaces in a defined environment, for example GestióIP .
