The settlement of al-Qurna al-Jadīda ( Arabic القرنة الجديدة al-Qurna al-Ǧadīda  'New Gurna', often just called New Gourna or Hassan Fathy Village ) is a settlement on the west side of Luxor . It was built from 1946 by the Egyptian architect Hassan Fathy on behalf of the Egyptian Antiquities Administration in order torelocatethe residents of Sheikh Abd el-Qurna . The reason for this was the looting oftombscarried out by the local residents, in particular through direct tunnels from their homes to ancient Egyptian tombs. The settlement is known for its clay architecture by the architect Hassan Fathy. Since many residents refused to move into the new settlement, work was stopped in 1952 and the settlement was not completely completed. The houses that had existed until then were moved into.

In the settlement there is a mosque , a khan and a theater, as well as the private house of Hassan Fathy. The boys 'school, as well as the girls' school and a craft school, as well as an exhibition hall have now been demolished. The market square and its enclosure have now been converted into a car park, but have been preserved.

Today only about 60 percent of the original buildings have been demolished. In 2010 the settlement was on the World Monuments Fund's list of endangered cultural assets .

It should not be confused with the village of the same name north of at-Tarif , which was built between 2006 and 2008 to finally relocate the residents of Sheikh Abd el-Qurna.
