IREN2

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

IREN2 ( sustainable networks for I ntegration r egenerativer En ergiesysteme ) is a research project in Wildpoldsried , Allgäu novel to the economic and technical study of the decentralized network structures and their management. IREN2 was started as a follow-up project to IRENE on July 1, 2014 and is scheduled to run for 3 years. The project was extended until March 2018 and has now been completed.

project

Building on the experience of the IRENE project, further research fields developed, which can be worked on with the infrastructure already installed in the previous project. Essentially, two concepts are being investigated in order to be able to integrate the regenerative systems in the distribution networks into the energy transition:

On the one hand, island network- capable microgrids are proposed for decoupling certain network regions, which can continue to supply the supply area in the event of a fault in a superimposed network level. With their decentralized approach, they can help ensure security of supply in a cost-effective manner without having to forego a high proportion of renewable generation.

Topological power plants describe network sections whose producers and consumers can be controlled together like a conventional power plant. As a topological power plant, a network section can contribute to system stability, especially in the transmission network, and thus take over the tasks of conventional power plants.

These concepts are to be examined in the context of this project according to economic and technical criteria. The investigations with regard to economic criteria are aimed primarily at the analysis of various operating strategies.

aims

  • Regulation-compliant integration of network operations management and the energy market
  • Proof of the feasibility of microgrids as island networks
  • Use and operation of microgrids as topological power plants

Relation to the previous project IRENE

The IRENE project has carried out important preparatory work in the study area that can be used in IREN2. The application addressed at IRENE was the integration of distributed generators and consumers into an active distribution network. In IREN2, on the one hand, the provision of system services from the distribution network to the higher-level network and, on the other hand, the decoupling of network sections from the higher-level network are considered.

Project partner

The Allgäuer Überlandwerk (AÜW), later AllgäuNetz, as application partner, Siemens AG as technology partner, IDKOM Networks GmbH as well as the University of Kempten and RWTH Aachen as research partner were involved in the joint project.

Follow-up project pebbles

The research project “pebbles”, which started in March 2018, can be viewed as a follow-up project to IREN2. In a similar consortium and building on the infrastructure created in IRENE and IREN2 and the established network, research on the possibilities of local energy markets is to take place there. The aim is the block chain are used technology. The project includes the construction of a demonstrator. Pebbles is funded by the BMWi.
