The Institut de Radioprotection et de Sûreté Nucléaire ( IRSN , translated as the Institute for Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety ) is a French , technical-scientific research and expert organization with around 1,600 employees and based in Fontenay-aux-Roses . Your task is to evaluate and improve the safety of nuclear facilities and to further develop the protection of people and the environment from the dangers and risks of such facilities. The focus of the work is on the field of nuclear safety .

The IRSN was established by state law in February 2002 and works on behalf of the ministries for the environment, health, industry, research and defense. The head office is in Fontenay-aux-Roses ; there are numerous branches with different focuses in northern and southern France as well as a branch in Tahiti .

A state-sponsored organization in Germany comparable to the IRSN is the Society for Plant and Reactor Safety (GRS).

The IRSN is a partner - jointly and in equal parts with the German GRS - in the company Riskaudit IRSN / GRS International ( European Economic Interest Grouping, EEIG), France. Riskaudit also has offices in Moscow (Russia) and Kiev (Ukraine) that work closely with IRSN and GRS.
