Standard for the exchange of product model data

STEP ( ST andard for the E xchange of P roduct model data ) is a standard for describing product data. In addition to the physical, it also includes functional aspects of a product. Product data information for the entire life cycle can be mapped within STEP.

  • AP 242 (Managed model based 3D engineering), replaces AP203 and AP214

The application protocols are packages of interfaces and data types that are designed for a specific application. Application protocol 214 is particularly tailored to the automotive industry, for example. At the same time, certain descriptions appear in several application logs. For example, both AP 203 and AP 214 can handle CAD data (geometry, material properties) in a boundary representation .

In Germany, VDI 3805 is also used for product data exchange in the field of technical building equipment.

The following parts of ISO 10303 are currently valid as a standard in Germany (as of 2008):

  • DIN ISO 10303-225 Industrial automation systems and integration - Product data representation and exchange - Part 225: Application protocol: Building elements with explicit representation of the component geometry (draft, edition 12.2004)

The IFC format is also used as a general data exchange format in the construction industry for building data (e.g. from construction-specific CAD systems) .
