Ian Micallef

Ian Micallef (born September 6, 1969 in Gżira , Malta ) was, after being re-elected in May 2008, from May 2006 to October 2010 President of the Chamber of Local Authorities of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe .
Ian Micallef holds a doctorate in law (specializing in European law) and has been a local councilor in Gżira (Malta) since 1994 and has been president of the Association of Maltese City and Local Councils since 1996. His international political career began in 1996 when he became chairman of the Maltese delegation to the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe. Since 2000 he has also served as a board member of the Commonwealth Local Government Forum . Ian Micallef was previously Vice-President of the Committee of the Regions of the European Union and a member of the Council for Democratic Elections of the Venice Commission of the Council of Europe . In May 2004 he was elected Vice-President of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities as a representative of the European People's Party. He has also participated in the organization of many international conferences of the Council of Europe and was responsible for reports on the situation of local democracy in various member states of the Council of Europe.
