Ibrahim Lodi (fictional portrait)

Ibrahim Lodi († April 20, 1526 ) was the last ruler of the Sultanate of Delhi . He belonged to the Lodi dynasty of Pashtun origin and ruled from 1517 to 1526.

biography

Ibrahim succeeded his father Sikandar Lodi (ruled 1489–1517) to the throne. He had to put down numerous uprisings by the neighboring Rajputs , which even reached shortly before Agra , the second capital of the Lodi Sultanate. He drew the resentment of the upper class by replacing almost all of the older military and civil servants with younger ones who were loyal to him. As a result of the internal unrest and at the instigation of the upper class, the Afghan prince Babur invaded the Sultanate of Delhi. Ibrahim Lodi was killed in the Battle of Panipat on April 20, 1526.

aftermath

The Sultanate of Delhi became part of the Mughal Empire . Ibrahim Lodi was buried in a simple, uncovered grave in Panipat , which was thoroughly restored (and probably also redesigned) by the British in 1867.
