history
Francisco Rodrigues Franco moved here from Leopoldina around 1800. He settled in this uninhabited area and is now considered the city founder and first resident of the place. During the 19th century, several other families moved to the area and started farms. The first settlement structures developed.
In 1922, the construction of the Estrada de Ferro Vitória-Minas (EFVM) railway was resumed after it had been interrupted in 1914 due to the outbreak of the First World War . In 1929 the construction workers built their first church here. In 1936 the steel company Companhia Siderúrgica Belgo Mineira settled in Calado, which had served as the seat of the district administration since 1933, to cut wood and henceforth to produce charcoal for the blast furnace in João Monlevade . As a result, the place grew and received a large number of new streets and a hospital, especially to counter the yellow fever epidemic . With the settlement of the steel company Companhia de Aços Especiais Itabira (Acesita) close by , the town received another significant growth impulse .
On December 27, 1948, Milton Campos , then Governor of Minas Gerais, signed the Charter of Coronel Fabriciano. The district administration was established on January 1, and January 20, 1949 was recorded as the actual date of foundation. On March 15, 1949, the now fully formed city administration met for the first time, Mayor ( Prefeito ) was Dr. Rubem Siqueira Maia. After only one primary school existed on site, the Archdiocese of Mariana set up a first secondary school in 1950, the Colégio Angélica . In 1972, the University of Trabalho University was established, today's Centro Universitário do Leste de Minas Gerais (Unileste-MG).
traffic
The construction of the Estrada de Ferro Vitória-Minas (EFVM) railway , coming from Vitória , was stopped when the First World War broke out in 1914 and only resumed in 1922. The line, which has been in operation since the late 1920s, contributed significantly to the region's industrial development. On January 29, 1979 the last passenger train passed through Coronal Fabriciano, the railway line was then closed to passenger traffic. Since then, private long-distance bus transport has completely taken over this function.
The Rodovia Fernão Dias is the BR-381 and the main road connecting the city. As Avenida Presidente Tancredo de Almeida Neves, it also runs through the town center.
