Ida! Sweet as Apple Cider is a pop song written by Eddie Leonard and published in 1903.

The minstrel singer Eddie Leonard wrote Ida! Sweet as Apple Cider 1903 during his appearances with the Primrose and West Minstrels. Leonard later edited the song for the Broadway musical Roly Boly Eyes (1919).

First recordings and later cover versions

Musicians who covered the song from 1917 onward included Earl Fuller 's Rector Novelty Orchestra (Columbia 2905), Frank Crumit (1924), Milton Brown & his Brownies (Decca), W. Lee O'Daniel and His Hillbilly Boys ( 1936) and Bing Crosby (Decca 2494); Eddie Cantor had Ida in his repertoire. Most popular in the late 1920s was the version by Red Nichols (1927, Brunswick 3626), who had a number one hit in the United States with the song .

The discographer Tom Lord lists a total of 28 (as of 2016) cover versions in the field of jazz , including a. by Benny Goodman , Humphrey Lyttelton , Bobby Hackett , Moe Wechsler , from the Dutch Swing College Band and numerous Dixieland bands . Even The Four Knights , Florian Zabach (1950) and Bill Haley (1958) coverten the song. Ida also found use in a number of musical films such as Babes in Arms (1939), If I Had My Way (1940), in which the song was introduced by Eddie Leonard, as well as in Broadway Rhythm (1944), Incendiary Blonde (1945) and The Eddie Cantor story (1953).
