The Ideal-Passage is a rental residential complex between Fuldastraße 55-56 and Weichselstraße 8 in the Donaustraße-Nord quarter in Berlin-Neukölln . It was built in 1907/1908. The complex, including its inner courtyards, is a listed building.

architecture

The residential complex was designed by the architects Willy Kind (January 14, 1877 - January 1946) and Paul Kind (July 24, 1881 - June 6, 1945). It extends over two former road lots and an inland lot. The builders were the Rixdorfer building cooperative "Ideal" eGmbH (today Baugenossenschaft IDEAL eG) for the two properties facing the street and the Rixdorf general local health insurance company for the central part (now privately owned).

Two front houses on the street side and wing buildings on the side of the property were built. The latter were connected by three transverse buildings, so that four inner courtyards were created. The facility was crossed by a private road from Weichselstrasse to Fuldastrasse.

The tenement houses were five-story, with a basement, the entrances were decorated with figural stucco, and some windows were stained glass. 203 rental units with one or two rooms, some with balconies, were created. Shops and commercial units were built in the front buildings and transverse buildings (some of them have now disappeared, can still be traced from the remains of old shop sign holders). There were fountains, sculptures and a large sundial (no longer available today).

During World War II, bombs destroyed a transverse building and parts of the side wing on Weichselstrasse. Today there are still 116 rental units. Some apartments were merged into three-room apartments. The facility is freely accessible today.

Historical meaning

The facility was considered a model for social living. The builders tried to implement their reformist ideas for tenements.

The level of equipment was accordingly unique for the time. The apartments had central heating, hot water, gas-coal stoves and there was a central dedusting system. Many apartments were also equipped with bathing facilities. The inner courtyards were designed to be light and space-like.
