Iga (first name)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Iga is a female given name of Polish origin.

The first name has its origin as a short form of the Polish first name Jadwiga (German: Hedwig ) but is now an independent first name. The following Catholic saints are mentioned as namesake:

  • Saint Hedwig of Andechs (also Hedwig of Silesia; (Polish: Jadwiga Śląska) * 1174 in Andechs; † October 15, 1243 in Trebnitz) was Duchess of Silesia. Hedwig is considered the patroness of reconciliation between Germans and Poles.
  • Hedwig von Anjou (also Saint Hedwig of Poland, Polish Jadwiga Andegaweńska, ... "von Anjou", Latin Hedvigis; * October 3, 1373 in furnace; † July 17, 1399 in Krakow) was the daughter of King Ludwig I of Poland, Hungary and Croatia from Anjou. She was regent and queen of Poland from 1384 until her death and was canonized in 1997. She is considered to be one of the most important regents in Polish history.

The first name is particularly known in Poland, but it is also rare there.
