Ignatius Chapel (Wingerode)
The Roman Catholic Ignatius Chapel is in the municipality of Wingerode in the Eichsfeld district in Thuringia .
history
At the beginning of the 17th century, Jesuits of the Heiligenstadt Jesuit College were given a farm in Wingerode to manage. In 1657 the chapel was built in honor of the founder of the order on the eastern outskirts of Wingerode. In 1661 it was expanded and rebuilt in 1715 due to lack of space.
The chapel has a square floor plan and a baroque mansard roof with a ridge tower. The front door bears the year 1737. Inside there are sculptures of St. Ignatius, St. Francis Xavier and Salvator from 1735, a Gothic Madonna and an image of the fourteen saints.
Pilgrimage
Since the 17th century there has been a pilgrimage on the Sunday after the name day (July 31st). The sermon was traditionally held by the pastor from the neighboring village of Beuren , as Wingerode historically belonged to the Beuren monastery . It is the only pilgrimage in honor of St. Ignatius in Germany.
