Ile des Cendres ( Vietnamese Hòn Tro , international name from French île des Cendres "ash island") is a group of submarine volcanoes southeast of the coast of Vietnam .
The group consists of two submarine cinder cones that formed two short-lived islands during the last eruption in 1923. One island was 30 m high and 450 m long, the other island was only 30 cm high and only 30 m wide. The islands then eroded to below sea level. A third cone grew up to 20 m below the sea surface. More cones occur between Ile des Cendres and mainland Vietnam.
