The Lake Illawarra is a coastal lagoon in Illawarra , Australia.

The inland lake covers around 36 km² and is a maximum of 3 m deep. The freshwater inflow comes from a nearby stratum through two rivers. The salt water tide occurs near a district of Wollongong . Sand erosion from the surrounding area compensates for the washout caused by the tide . The bird life there includes pelicans , cormorants , lobsters , haircocks , black swans , herons and ibises .

use

The use of sailing boats is permitted on the lake. A nearby 435 MW gas power plant uses the lagoon water for cooling purposes. It is considered the recreational area of ​​Wollongong.
