Illicit Trafficking Radiation Detection Assessment Program

Illicit Trafficking Radiation Detection Assessment Program (ITRAP for short, German: Program for the Uncovering of Illegal Smuggling and Trade in Radioactive Substances ) is a study aimed at the detection of contaminated scrap shipments and the prevention of nuclear crime .

The iTrap study was conducted from September 1997 to 2000 and by a pre-selection of devices of the Research Center Austrian Institute of Technology on the location Seibersdorf . The selected devices were installed at the border post in Nickelsdorf and at Vienna Airport .

The aim of the ITRAP study was to develop the technical requirements and feasibility for a sensible surveillance system at border crossings. The results are to be offered to the member states by the International Atomic Energy Agency as international recommendations for such monitoring systems.
