The research center Seibersdorf , also Austrian research center , atomic research center or English Seibersdorf Laboratories , is a technology center in Seibersdorf in the Baden district in Lower Austria , which offers training, research, laboratory services up to the treatment of radioactive waste.

geography

The research center is located in the industrial district , about 30 kilometers south of the city center of Vienna, 20 kilometers east of Baden and 15 kilometers north of Eisenstadt not far from the state border, near the Leithagebirge . The group of houses is located 2½ kilometers north of Seibersdorf on the B 60  Leitha Straße at about 185  m above sea level. A. Elevation.

Reactor Center Seibersdorf

In 1958 the Austrian Study Society for Atomic Energy  (SGAE), founded two years earlier for Austria's entry into the atomic age , bought a 110-  hectare site in the Seibersdorf community for a research site - purchase negotiations in Götzendorf and in the area between Maria Ellend and Regelsbrunn had previously failed .

The Seibersdorf reactor center was built on this site between 1958 and 1960 . In addition to institutes for electronics , physics , chemistry , metallurgy and radiation protection , the first research reactor in Austria, the Adapted Swimming Pool Type Reactor Austria  (ASTRA), was built as the central research device. An interim storage facility for low-level radioactive waste was also built.

The International Atomic Energy Agency  (IEAO / IAEA, Headquarters Vienna- UNO-City ) has also been operating laboratories in Seibersdorf since 1962.

Two stages of expansion were planned for the Austrian reactor center:

  • In a first step, the ASTRA reactor was to be expanded into a material test reactor with an output of 15  MW .
  • In a further step, a prototype of a nuclear power plant was to be built.

For financial reasons, however, there was never an expansion. Since nuclear energy did not develop into the leading technology, as was assumed in the 1950s, research was also diversified in the reactor center. After Austria withdrew from nuclear power ( Atomic Barrier Act  1978), the original task was no longer applicable, only the research reactor continued to operate. This departure from the focus on nuclear energy was also reflected in the change of the name to Forschungszentrum Seibersdorf . The nuclear reactor was decommissioned in 1999-2004.
In 2006 the official company name was changed to Austrian Research Centers , in 2009 to Austrian Institute of Technology  (AIT). Today it operates several important research institutions.

The Seibersdorf Center is operated by Seibersdorf Labor  GmbH, which was installed in 2008 . The owners are the Republic of Austria (50.46%) via the AIT , where it is subordinate to the Federal Ministry for Climate Protection, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation and Technology , and the Austrian Federation of Industry .
As part of the original task, a laboratory for dosimetry for large parts of Austria is operated. For radiation protection there is the Radiation Protection Academy , which carries out the training of radiation protection officers , but also for the authorities, fire brigade and other aid organizations (BOS) and the armed forces. Research is also carried out on radiopharmaceuticals , biomarkers and positron emission tomography  (PET). There are also test centers for lasers and LED lamps , electromagnetic compatibility  (EMC), and laboratories for high-frequency technology and chemical analysis ( environmental and geoanalysis , drug testing , doping controls and forensic analysis ) - for example, extensive surveys were carried out here together with the Federal Geological Institute on natural and anthropogenic pollution in Austria.
The nuclear waste storage facility for Austria - due to the renouncement of nuclear power, only occurs as less radioactive and in small quantities, especially from radiological medicine - is operated by Nuclear Engineering Seibersdorf  GmbH (NES). A total of around 15 tons of radioactive waste from medicine, industry and research is generated every year.

The Department of Nuclear Sciences and Applications of the International Atomic Energy Agency also runs laboratories here - and in Vienna - which have since become international reference centers, the FAO / IAEA Agriculture and Biotechnology Laboratory (together with the World Food Organization FAO, for soil science , plant and animal breeding , Entomology and Agrochemicals ), the Physics, Chemistry and Instrumentation Laboratory (chemistry and instrumentation, dosimetry , isotope hydrology ), as well as the Safeguards Analytical Laboratory ( isotope analysis , chemical analysis , clean laboratory for evidence), as well as a training center, in which in the last decades 2300 scientists and technicians from 120 countries received further training. The IAEA laboratories are operated by the General Services and Safety Section  (GESS). The Safeguards Analytical Laboratory of the IAEA achieved worldwide fame especially in 2007, as evidence of an Iranian nuclear program was found here. Today, however, the facilities are largely out of date; the former IAEA director Mohammed el-Baradei urged member states to invest at the time.

Since the facilities were built far away from metropolitan areas and cannot be reached by public transport, shuttle buses run regularly from Gramatneusiedl station to the center and back. The International Atomic Energy Agency transports its 180 or so employees in Seibersdorf every day by bus from Vienna to and from Vienna.
