Material test reactor
Material test reactors ( MTR ) belong to the group of research reactors and are intended for the investigation of nuclear fuels and radiation damage in structural materials caused by fast neutrons . They have a very compact reactor core in order to achieve the greatest possible neutron flux density.
Examples
Examples of material test reactors in Germany are:
- the Berlin experimental reactor in Berlin (Hahn-Meitner-Institut Berlin, thermal output 10 MW, in operation since 1973)
- the research neutron source Heinz Maier-Leibnitz in Garching (Technical University of Munich, Garching, output 20 MW th., in operation since 2004)
- the Geesthacht research reactor in Geesthacht (GKSS research center Geesthacht, output 5 MW th., in operation since 1958)
Examples of material test reactors in Austria are:
- the adapted swimming pool tank reactor Austria in Seibersdorf, south of Vienna ( Research Center Seibersdorf , output 9.5 MW, in operation from 1960 to 1999)
