Michael King (historian)

Michael King OBE (born December 15, 1945 , † March 30, 2004 Maramarua , New Zealand) was a New Zealand historian and author .

Life

After graduating from Sacred Heart College in Auckland and St. Patrick's College in Silverstream , King studied history at Victoria University of Wellington , where he received a bachelor's degree in history in 1967 . In 1968 he graduated from the University of Waikato with a Masters degree in history . King then worked as a journalist for the Waikato Times newspaper in Hamilton . In 1978 he obtained the Ph.D. in history from the University of Waikato.

King dealt in his work with the history and culture of the Māori in New Zealand. On the subject of Māori, he published the works Being Pakeha (1985), Moiori (1989) and The Penguin History of New Zealand (2003) , among others . He also wrote biographies on Te Puea Herangi , Whina Cooper , Frank Sargeson (1995) and Janet Frame (2000).

After the failure of his first marriage, King married Maria Jungowska. In 2004, King and his wife died in a car accident near Maramarua (north of Waikato).
