“Ils ne passeront pas!” , Also “On ne passe pas!” (German: “You will not get through!”, Spanish: “¡No pasarán!”; Romanian: “Pe aici nu se trece!”) Is a Slogan that expresses the determination not to let the opponent conquer a position.

Ils ne passeront pas!

Ils ne passeront pas! was used by the French generals Robert Nivelle and Philippe Pétain as the motto for resisting the German attackers during the Battle of Verdun . It was later used in many propaganda posters as well as a slogan for the Maginot Line .

Pe aici nu se trece!

Later in the war, at the Battle of Mărăşeşti , Romanian soldiers used the Romanian translation of the slogan.

¡No pasarán!

Shortly after the start of the Spanish Civil War , the Republican Dolores Ibárruri used the Spanish version of the slogan in her radio-broadcast speech of July 18, 1936. Your appeal ended with:

“¡Viva el Frente Popular! ¡Viva la unión de todos los antifascistas! ¡Viva la República del pueblo! ¡Los fascistas no pasarán! ¡No pasarán! "

“Long live the Popular Front! Long live the unity of all anti-fascists. Long live the republic of the people! The fascists will not get through! You shall not pass!"

After the capture of Madrid in 1939 (after almost three years of siege ), Francisco Franco responded to the slogan with “Hemos pasado”, meaning “We got through”. A little later Ibárruri fled.

Today, the Spanish version of the slogan is a symbol of the political left.

In popular culture

In The Companions , Gandalf yells at the Balrog with “You shall not pass!”. The last words of a French commando in World War Z by Max Brooks were "On ne passe pas!".
