natural reserve
The rainforest around Iluka has been used for recreation since 1916. In the early 1960s, a conflict between nature conservation and economic interests developed around the nature reserve. In 1964 this led to the government placing large parts of the area under protection and allowing sand mining in the vicinity of the reserve. In 1976 the public demanded further protection and it was declared a nature reserve and in 1986 a world heritage site. In the 1990s there was a risk that the protected rainforest would be removed from the World Heritage List due to the penetration of herbaceous plants; further penetration of these plants could be prevented through the initiative of the local population.
Tourist information
There are two campsites in the reserve, from where you can hike, fish and paddle boats on Jerusalem Creek .
