Iluwer

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Iluwer ( aram. אלור) is a deity from the Syrian-Palestinian region. The oldest mention is found in a stele of King Zakkir of Hamath from the end of the 9th century BC. In it Iluwer is מראה "his master", d H. Lord and thus personal or dynasty god of King Zakkir.

In later Akkadian lists, Iluwer is equated with Hadad . To what extent this is an old tradition or merely testifies to a late syncretism is controversial.

The first part of the name contains the common Semitic word "El" for deity. E. Lipinski interprets the second part of the name as Mer , due to the common Babylonian sound swapping w ↔ m, i.e. the eponymous city god of Mari .
