Mellenthin Church

The village church Mellenthin is one of three churches in the parish Morgenitz in the provost Pasewalk in the Evangelical Church Pomeranian District of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Northern Germany . Until 2012 she belonged to the Greifswald parish of the Pomeranian Evangelical Church . It is located in Mellenthin in the Vorpommern-Greifswald district on the island of Usedom .

location

As a central connecting axis , the Dorfstrasse leads from the north as well as from the south into the historic town center. It also branches off to the northeast and there points in a visual axis to the moated castle Mellenthin . In the triangular plot spanned in this way, the church stands on a plot of land that is enclosed by a wall of reddish stones .

history

The Dehio manual assumes that the choir “probably” originated at the end of the 13th century. The nave was built at the beginning of the 14th century as a branch of the Usedomer Paulskirche. The west tower was added in the 15th century . In 1755 he received a curly bonnet with an octagonal helmet . An extensive renovation and conservation of the paintings took place between 2000 and 2005.

Building description

The choir has a square floor plan and was made from field stones . It has ribbed vaults inside and is separated from the nave by a pointed triumphal arch. The eastern gable is provided with two-zone panels as well as a toothed frieze and stepped diamond panels. To the north is a sacristy from 1650, which served as a burial place for the previous owners and patrons of Mellenthin. The nave was essentially made of bricks with arched windows. A trough mill was walled in at the south portal, which for a long time served as a holy water font. The church tower connects to the west. It can be entered through a triple stepped, pointed arch portal; above an archivolt in three-pass form .

Furnishing

West gallery with organ

The small altarpiece from the 18th century shows the Lord's Supper and is adorned with ornate cheeks made of acanthus . The pulpit dates from the 17th century. The other church furnishings include baroque chairs and a confessional, which were painted ornamentally. A painting depicting the Last Judgment is dated 1694, a crucifixion image 1698. The bell was donated by Friedrich II of Hessen-Homburg and made in 1654 by the Szczecin bell caster G. Köckritz.

The ceiling paintings in the choir with Old and New Testament scenes as well as the martyrdom of Saint Erasmus , which were uncovered in the 1930s, date from around 1420/1430 . They probably come from the workshop of the Marienkirche in Stralsund .

The builder of the moated castle Mellenthin Rüdiger von Neuenkirchen († 1594) and his wife Ilsabe von Eickstedt are shown on a grave slab on the south wall . During the Reformation in Pomerania the von Neuenkirchen appropriated the parish, so that the parish ceased. Since then, the Mellenthin parish has been provided for by the pastor of the Morgenitz church .

The west gallery probably dates from around 1700 and is richly decorated with allegorical paintings. On top of it stands an organ that was built by Barnim Grüneberg in 1879 . The instrument has a neo-Gothic prospectus , a manual and four registers . However, the pipes are no longer original; they probably had to be given in 1917 for war purposes. The instrument has been damaged by vandalism and theft in recent decades. For several years now, the church has been looked after by volunteer members. The instrument will be restored in 2020.
