Imbroglio

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Imbroglio ( Italian for deceit ; English for confusion ) means in music a special irregular type of intonation in which various rhythmic means create an illusory meter in which even and odd order seem to contradict one another. A well-known type of Imbroglio is the hemiole , in which e.g. B. the 68 cycle and the 34 cycle stand against each other. Examples can be found from the 16th century until today. The term did not appear until the 18th century.
