Imbroglio
Imbroglio ( Italian for deceit ; English for confusion ) means in music a special irregular type of intonation in which various rhythmic means create an illusory meter in which even and odd order seem to contradict one another. A well-known type of Imbroglio is the hemiole , in which e.g. B. the 6 ⁄ 8 cycle and the 3 ⁄ 4 cycle stand against each other. Examples can be found from the 16th century until today. The term did not appear until the 18th century.
