from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Impact Corner is an international non-profit organization based in Zurich that is committed to solving social and ecological problems by creating jobs. One of the members of the Board of Trustees is Samuel Muoto, who himself comes from Africa and therefore knows many of these problems from personal experience.

The foundation develops and implements appropriate concepts and business plans for the establishment of so-called social businesses . These are companies that offer people work and whose profits are partially used to build charitable institutions such as orphanages or schools.

Impact Corner operates on an international level. The focus in 2017 will be on projects in Ethiopia , Ghana , Liberia , Cambodia and Ecuador .

organization structure

The foundation acts as the leading unit for the various social enterprises. The foundation provides funding, technology and project management, and monitors social and environmental standards and general business progress.

Each project is run like a normal company, by a locally recruited management team that is selected and approved by the board of directors. Impact Corner appoints a dedicated project manager who oversees the individual project activities and works with local managers. The project managers take care of operational and administrative matters of the assigned company on behalf of Impact Corner.

Financing the projects

The basic structures of the social enterprise are established with the help of private and institutional donors. This is intended to bridge the phase between start and growth, which is known as the “Valley of Death”. This term refers to the period between the initial capital contributions for a startup business to the point when the company begins generating income. During this phase, additional sources of funding are usually scarce, so there is a risk of cash flow bottlenecks. Social projects in particular are often prone to such problems. Due to their startup status and geographic location, they often find it particularly difficult to attract investors to their idea.

About 30 percent of the capital is provided by philanthropists and charitable foundations, the other 70 percent by investors.
