In Re Dei

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In Re Dei was an ecumenical DDR - rock band (1970-1990).

It was founded in 1970 by Martin Gottschalk (vocals, guitar) with Werner Strecker (drums, bass from 1971), Wolfgang Strecker (lead guitar) and from 1971 Andreas Schatz (drums) in the regional church community in Halle (Saale) and performed exclusively in church Areas, initially as a band accompanying the event, later giving independent concerts. In Re Dei consisted of trained musicians who organized their performances part-time in their spare time (about 20 a year).

After the band initially appeared as the band , in 1977 they gave themselves the Latin name In Re Dei (name suggestion by Horst Sturm, meaning: in God's cause) in order to refer to their main concern, to offer modern music in the church sector, to take up questions, to initiate To give thought and to invite to the Christian faith. Most of her songs were her own compositions and were composed in various musical styles such as rock, reggae, blues and ballads.

In Re Dei toured through the GDR from Thuringia to the Baltic Sea and performed in cities such as Dresden, Erfurt, Leipzig, Halle, Dessau, Magdeburg and Berlin.

The one and a half hour concerts were themed as “Lifestyle”, “God leads me ways”, “Doesn't matter what you do”, “Rockspiegel”, “Moments” and “Behind the horizon”.

The band changed their line-up due to life-course and in 1990 consisted of Martin Gottschalk (saxophone, vocals, band leader), Hans-Jürgen Balasus (lead guitar, musical director), Helga Gottschalk (vocals, percussion), Andreas Sobbe (bass), Joachim Kohr (keyboard) and Horst Sturm (drums, vocals).

The band also included sound and light technicians, as In Re Dei performed with a PA system and a stage show. A lot of time and money had to be spent on the technical equipment.

In Re Dei, from 1978 onwards, he took part in band meetings that were organized every six months, helped to organize them and invited specialist speakers to offer professional training.

From 1981 the band had a practice room in the evangelical city mission in Halle, under whose legal ownership they placed themselves from 1989 for political reasons.

From 1986 the band was represented by Martin Gottschalk in the working group music of the GDR in Berlin (AGM - a working group for the promotion of Christian rock and pop music).

In the GDR, the studio recording and reproduction of music on vinyl was reserved for the professionally classified bands and was subject to censorship by the state authorities, while other groups were dependent on tape recordings of their performances.

In the 1980s, the Music Working Group tried to use semi-professional technology and with the help of Reinhard Walter (jazz pianist and sound engineer for the GDR radio) to record the church bands and to present them in the "Edition" series on compact cassettes. For In Re Dei that was 1989; this cassette was never released due to the political change.

The band was published with advertising posters and in the following magazines:
