The ME 05 is a diesel-electric shunting locomotive from the manufacturer Krauss-Maffei with three-phase drive technology and single-axle drive. The electrical equipment was supplied by the BBC . One machine was used in test operation in 1982 on loan from the Deutsche Bundesbahn (DB) as 259 001-6 and then sold to the port railway in Aschaffenburg .

As a frame of this type, which was developed in a modular design, massive solid profiles with cross members were used. Illuminated shunting stands are attached to all four corners. The exchangeable, easily accessible functional units should make maintenance and repair as easy as possible.

At the State Railways, the trial deployments took place in the roster of the DB series 260 and 290 . There was no serial order from the state railway. In addition to a dozen deliveries with a middle driver's cab to industrial railways, most of which went to the Peine-Salzgitter transport company , there was also a variant with a final driver's cab. The latter were mainly built for the Dortmund railway and sold or scrapped after only about twenty years of service. This design, known as Telelok, was intended to allow for operation using radio remote control , but has not caught on. The diesel-hydraulic variant of the type MH 05, which was largely identical in appearance, was also in trial use at the DB and was sold to industrial companies on a somewhat larger scale.
