DB class 259

Under the designation class 259 , various diesel locomotives were lined up at the Deutsche Bundesbahn and Deutsche Bahn AG , which were rented for trial purposes.

259 001

From July 1970 to February 1973, the Deutsche Bundesbahn rented a Whitcomb RS-4-TC manufactured by Baldwin from the Transportation Corps of the US Army . The locomotive with the number 4010 was completed in 1953 with the factory number 61240. The locomotive was used in the area of ​​the Mannheim marshalling yard. Today the locomotive is in the Kentucky Railway Museum .

259 001-005

Between 1982 and 1985, the Deutsche Bundesbahn rented five different shunting locomotives in order to test possible successors for the V 60, which was around 25 years old at the time . Four of the locomotives were diesel-electric , only one had a diesel-hydraulic drive . They were not given any new paint in their colors for the time they were in service with the DB, but kept the mostly orange / yellow color scheme chosen by the manufacturer.

The 259 001 was a Krauss-Maffei ME 05 locomotive that had previously been used as a demonstration locomotive by the manufacturer for a year. It was used from March 8 to September 25, 1982 in the Munich area. At the vehicle show 150 Years of German Railways in Bochum-Dahlhausen from October 3 to 13, 1985, the radio remote control was demonstrated with it; she also took part in the 1985 anniversary parade in Nuremberg. After these missions, she came to the Aschaffenburg port railway , which she sold to a locomotive dealer in Sweden in 2010.

259 002

The locomotive with the number 259 002 belonged to the MaK DE 501 type and was in service with the Deutsche Bundesbahn from September 11, 1982 to February 5, 1983. After the trial run, it was initially rented out by the manufacturer until it came to RAG in 1986 , where it was in use until 2008 under number 559. Today it is owned by Voith Turbo Lokomotivtechnik.

259 003

The number 259,003 was from March 5 to 9 July 1983, a locomotive of the type Gmeinder EN 500 C Company Gmeinder , which was also tested in the Munich area. After the trial, it was sent to a sulfur works in Northern Germany and has been at a locomotive dealer since 2003.

In 1997 an EMD JT26CW-SS (Class 59) locomotive was tested.

259 004

Outwardly, the 259 004, a Henschel DE 500 C , which was in service from September 8 to December 19, 1983, clearly differed from the other locomotives . Compared to the fairly uniform orange of the other machines, it had a red-orange paintwork with yellow decorative stripes on which the name of the manufacturer and the type designation could be read. After a trial run and a rental job, she got to the port railway of the Koblenzer Stadtwerke, which she has been using since then under the number DE 1.

259 005

The fifth locomotive, 259 005, was again an industrial locomotive from the Krauss-Maffei production program , but compared to the diesel-electric ME 05, it was the diesel-hydraulic MH 05 . It was used by DB from December 18, 1984 to April 30, 1985 and then came to the Essen port railway via a dealer . Since then she has been in shunting service there.

Although the test runs of these five locomotives brought positive results, the DB decided not to purchase a new shunting locomotive, but continued to handle the shunting operations with the locomotives of the V 60 series. From 1997, with the trial run of a MaK G 322 B locomotive as the 352 series, another attempt was made to replace the V 60, but this was also ended without result, so that the V 60, which is now over 50 years old, continues to be used at many train stations in the Shunting operations are to be found.
