Index fungorum

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Index Fungorum is one of three databases for scientific names officially recognized by the Nomenclature Committee for Fungi on the World Wide Web .

Behind the database is an international project that has set itself the task of making all scientifically described mushroom names available online. Several scientific institutions work together. Royal Botanic Gardens (Kew) has been in charge of the project since 2015 . Other partners are Landcare Research and the Institute of Microbiology , Chinese Academy of Sciences. The data is compared with other taxonomy databases such as Mycobank . The database is comparable to the International Plant Names Index (IPNI), in which the Royal Botanic Gardens is also involved. In contrast, the Index Fungorum also indicates the status of a name. In the entries on the search page, a currently correct name is displayed in green, while others are displayed in blue. If names are used differently by different authors, the deviating use is marked in red. All names are linked to a page with their current correct name and a list of synonyms . Many mushroom names are also linked directly to their original diagnosis.
