Index Medicus

The Medicus Index was an American specialist bibliography that cataloged medical publications and books.

It was founded in 1878 by the military doctor John Shaw Billings . In the decades after World War II , it was the primary source of information for medical scientists. The publisher was the United States National Library of Medicine . A single year consisted of many extensive volumes. In December 2004 the printed edition of the Index Medicus was discontinued.

The successor to the Index Medicus is the electronic database MEDLINE , to which there are various online accesses. PubMed is a search engine that searches among other things in the MEDLINE database.
