Indian Airlines flight 171 was a flight of the domestic airline Indian Airlines from Bombay to Madras . On October 12, 1976, a Sud Aviation Caravelle crashed on this route shortly after take-off after a fire and control problems had occurred. All 95 inmates died.

plane

The aircraft concerned was a nine-year-old Sud Aviation Caravelle VI-N with the aircraft registration VT-DWN, serial number 231.

course

A Boeing was originally intended for this flight. Due to engine problems on the ground, this was replaced by a Sud Aviation Caravelle. Shortly after take-off from runway 27, engine no. 2 (right) failed, which also caught fire. The pilots immediately turned around and attempted an emergency landing on runway 09. During the approach, the pilots lost control and the aircraft hit the ground at 1:35 hrs with a vertical inclination of 45 °.

root cause

The cause of the crash was the bursting of the tenth compressor disc of engine number 2. The debris from this compressor disc severed fuel lines, causing a fire to break out in the engine. Because the pilots did not cut off the fuel supply, the fire spread and penetrated the hydraulic reservoir, causing the hydraulic fluid to flow out and making the aircraft uncontrollable.
