The Hindu-necked owl ( Otus bakkamoena ), also called the Indian scops owl , is a medium-sized owl from the genus of the scops owls ( Otus ). The Hindu collar owl is a widespread and common species on the Indian subcontinent. It comes in a gray and a brown color morph. Several subspecies are distinguished. The IUCN classifies the existing situation as safe ( least concern ).

The Hindu-necked owl reaches a body length of 20 to 22 centimeters, of which 6.5 to 8.9 centimeters are on the tail. The weight is between 125 and 152 grams. There is no noticeable gender dimorphism .

The face veil of the gray color morph is pale gray-brown with a blackish edge. The parting is almost blackish and noticeably darker than the coat. The forehead and eyebrows are lighter than the surrounding plumage. The feather ears are long in relation to the body size. The back is gray-brown with dark vertical stripes. The underside of the body is isabel-colored to ocher-colored, becomes lighter towards the belly and has few darker longitudinal stripes. The legs are pale gray-brown to white feathered. The eyes are hazel brown to brown, only in a few individuals they have a yellowish tone. The beak is greenish horn-colored. The lower bill is lighter than the upper bill.

The brown color morph has a similar plumage coloration, but the basic tone of the plumage is a red-brown.

Distribution area and habitat

The range of the Hindu-necked owl extends from the south of Pakistan over the northwest of the Himalayas and central Nepal to Sri Lanka. In this large area of ​​distribution, the Hindu-necked owl is predominantly a resident bird.

The species is very adaptable. In addition to forests, it occurs in arid landscapes and can also be found near human settlements. Their altitude distribution ranges from the lowlands to altitudes of 2200 meters.

Way of life

The Hindu Collared Owl is nocturnal and is rarely seen during the day. She spends this time well hidden in the canopy of leafy trees.

The diet consists mainly of insects, including beetles and grasshoppers. It also occasionally eats vertebrates such as lizards, mice, and small songbirds.

Hindu Collared Owls breed in natural tree hollows. The clutch consists of three to four eggs.
