Indonesian Tsunami Early Warning System

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Indonesian Tsunami Early Warning System is the state tsunami early warning system of the State of Indonesia, operated by its Agency for Meteorology, Climate and Geophysics (BMKG). The BMKG issues tsunami warnings using the system and sets alarm chains in motion. At the end of 2018, Indonesia's President Joko Widodo ordered a new tsunami warning system to be set up. The function of the system, which will exist until the end of 2018, is controversial.

history

Part of the Indonesian warning system is based on the Indonesian-German GITEWS project , which set up an early warning system from 2004 to 2011. According to media reports (Al Jazeera), this system has not been in operation since 2012 due to insufficient funding, vandalism on measuring equipment and lack of support; During the Sulawesi earthquake in 2018 , the alert did not reach the people affected by the tsunami sufficiently.

The current tsunami early warning system consists of a network of 134 level measuring stations, supported by seismographs on land. Public sirens in 55 locations and an SMS alert are intended to warn those affected in the coastal regions.

A prototype for this system was developed with the help of the US National Science Foundation in the amount of 4.1 million USD.

The data is part of the Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning System . After the tsunami in the Strait of Java and Sumatra at the end of December 2018 , government officials announced that they would set up a functioning warning system in 2019.
