The former building of the GDR Chamber of Commerce and Industry is located in the Mitte district of Berlin at the intersection of Chausseestrasse and Invalidenstrasse .

History and conception

The building was built from 1954 to 1957 and designed by the architect Johannes Päßler in the style of the architecture of the national traditions . The previous building at this point was the second C&A branch in Germany. The building has six floors and is characterized by an arcade area. An extension by the architects Borchard and Balke was built between 1959 and 1961. The complex represents an outstanding example of building culture in the early days of the GDR. After the fall of the Wall, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry moved out of the building.

In 2002–2005 the rear was rebuilt, with parts of the courtyard being converted into a covered atrium. The complex is now a listed building . This also includes part of the original interior with built-in wardrobes.
