At the end of 1945 he followed his fiancée Charlotte to Stade, whom he married the following year. They had a happy marriage until their death on October 15, 2006, as Dabelow emphasized again and again. After the end of the war he was employed by Gummi-Schmidt in Stade, where he became chairman of the works council and helped rebuild the union. From 1959 he worked at the Phoenix Gummiwerke in Harburg , since the 1960s on the works council. He stayed in the company until 1984.

From 1954 to 1979 Dabelow worked as a labor judge. Since 1965 he was a member of the board of the administrative office of IG Chemie, Papier, Keramik Hamburg .

From 1968 to 1976 he was chairman of the city council's social committee and from 1968 to 1972 deputy chairman of the transport committee. On May 5, 1969 Dabelow was SPD parliamentary group chairman in the council. In 1972 he was elected 2nd Deputy Mayor of Stade. He became a member of the Administrative Committee, the Finance Committee, the Environmental Protection Committee and, from 1972 to 1976, Chairman of the Transport Committee. He was elected honorary mayor of the Hanseatic city of Stade for a first term from 1976 to 1981, after which he was first deputy mayor until 1986. During that time he was also active on the administrative board of the Stadtsparkasse, in the shareholders' meeting of Wohnbau Niederelbe, in the transport and administration committee. In 1986 he was re-elected mayor, but shared the electoral term with Horst Eylmann and only remained mayor until 1989, after which he was once again active as first deputy mayor and in numerous committees and bodies for the city. From 1991 to 2001 Dabelow was again mayor of Stade for 10 years.

Dabelow was a supporter of the Stade nuclear power plant , which enabled the city center to be upgraded and the city's infrastructural expansion thanks to the business tax revenue generated. Through his political involvement, Dabelow also made a decisive contribution to the renovation of the old town of Stade.
