The term infaust (from the Latin infaustus 'unfavorable') is used in medicine when the prognosis for the further course of the disease is very unfavorable. An infamous prognosis usually means that the (current) condition of the patient does not enable a cure and death is to be expected.
The term infaust is often used to justify a change in the therapy goal when the ( curative ) therapy initially aimed at healing is converted into symptom-relieving ( palliative medical ) treatment if the prognosis is poor .
It must be taken into account here that it is always a matter of a prediction with sources of error of varying magnitude (cf. forecast errors ), which does not necessarily have to be true. The assessment of whether a disease situation is unfavorable can, among other things, be influenced by the qualification, experience and mood of the person making the assessment. Particularly when such predictions are handled carelessly, it happens again and again that a supposedly poor forecast does not come true. The cause of such discrepancies can be better or new therapies or simply a wrong diagnosis (see miracle healing ).
An example of a malformation , always with an unfavorable prognosis is anencephaly . Examples of infamous diseases are glioblastoma or rabies .
