LITRA - Information Service for Public Transport ( Litra for short , proper spelling LITRA) is an association based in Bern .

LITRA is the platform for transport policy in Switzerland and the contact point for factual and well-founded information on public transport in Switzerland. LITRA offers its members important networking opportunities with decision-makers. It informs members, politics, but also the media, authorities, science and the general public about current transport policy issues, developments and events. LITRA takes a position on central transport policy issues and looks at the most important transport issues in each session.

history

Litra was founded in 1935 as part of the vote on the road sharing initiative as Li gue suisse pour l'organization rationelle du tra fic . Its purpose was to "support the authorities in protecting the public transport facilities". The board consisted of the civil councilors Hans Käser (president) and Bernard de Weck (vice president) as well as the BGB national councilor Hans Tschumi. In 1977 the association was renamed LITRA , the public transport information service .

The association was a pioneer in transport policy: as early as 1960 - the planning of the national road network was barely completed - it called for an “overall conception of Swiss transport policy” to prevent traffic problems. In the context of the “ forest dying debate ” in the 1980s, the Litra criticized the constant growth in traffic and saw road traffic emissions as a main cause. It therefore campaigned intensively for the introduction of a heavy vehicle tax and a motorway vignette.

In the 1990s, the Litra increasingly advocated an ecological transport policy: it observed the steady growth in road freight transport with concern. On the one hand, she feared the loss of importance of the SBB and thus financial losses for the community. On the other hand, she was concerned about the negative health consequences of traffic emissions for the population and nature.

With the Prix LITRA, LITRA promotes young public transport talents and aims to promote interest in the industry and encourage reflection on current topics. Works on questions of spatial planning, climate friendliness of transport, tariff issues and planning and better use of the infrastructure are particularly well received.
