Information lifecycle management

Information lifecycle management ( ILM , English information lifecycle management ) comprises strategies, methods and applications in order to provide information automatically according to its value and use optimally on the most cost-effective storage medium , to develop it and to store it securely over the long term.

The term comes from the United States and was supported by different storage system providers in 2003 as Marketing - Keyword chosen. The term was used in various ways and with different meanings as early as the 1990s. The term is made up of the components " Information ", "Lifecycle" (English for life cycle; drawn together from life cycle in order to be able to form a three-letter acronym ) and "Management" in the sense of the administration, handling and control of information in an information system .

ILM describes a storage strategy. The aim of this strategy is to store information according to its value on the most economical storage medium, including the rules and processes for moving information to the appropriate storage media. The management and storage control mechanisms are based on the importance , value and costs of the electronic information. For this purpose, the data, sources and storage systems are classified, which allow automated provision within a storage hierarchy.

The manufacturer association for storage system solutions SNIA defines ILM as follows:

  • ILM Vision: A new set of management practices based on aligning the business value of information to the most appropriate and cost effective infrastructure .
  • ILM definition: Information Lifecycle Management is compromised of the policies, processes, practices, and tools used to align the business value of information with the most appropriate and cost effective IT infrastructure from the time information is conceived through its final disposition. Information is aligned with business processes through management policies and service levels associated with applications, metadata, information, and data .

Functions of ILM solutions

In order to be able to meet these user requirements, ILM solutions require a large number of functions. These functions are combined in individual components. The components in turn form a closed framework in order to be able to cover all requirements of ILM integratively. The most important components of ILM include:

  • Acquisition: Subsystems and software for the acquisition, preparation, processing, indexing and organization of various forms of information
  • Management of documents , content and media assets: software for the controlled creation, management, publication and distribution of information
  • Storage: Subsystems for the optimized storage of any type of information with the support of a wide variety of hardware, software-based displacement strategies, distributed environments and usability by all applications in one system
  • Access and administration: database-supported registry , document, metadata and index administration for orderly, fast access to the stored information
  • Process support: Workflow and business process management software for the provision, consolidation and control of information and for the control of storage processes
  • Long-term archiving : Subsystems for unchangeable, long-term electronic archiving in accordance with legal and regulatory requirements

The interaction of the various components supports the entire life cycle of the information from its creation to its disposal .
