Inculpat

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Inculpat ( accused or accused , from late Latin inculpare "to accuse") was the name of the person accused of a serious offense in the inquisition process before the start of the interrogation . After the preliminary investigation, the accused is called the Inquisit during the actual trial .

The terms inculpate and inquisit were later also used in normal jurisdiction and can still be found in the language of the 19th century.

Up until the beginning of the 20th century, the opposite term to inculpate , namely exculpate for “apologize” or “free oneself from guilt”, was part of general, not only legal, German usage.
